BPCL SBI Card OCTANE

Joining ₹1,499 · Annual ₹1,499 · Renewal fee reversed on ₹2,00,000 eligible annual spends in the previous membership year

Fee break-even: ≈₹5,99,600/yr through this card at its base rate. Below that, the fee eats the rewards.

Earns Reward Points · assumed 0.25 ₹/point. 4 RP = ₹1, fixed by SBI's own T&C. Best route is instant PoS redemption for free fuel at ~3,719 authorised BPCL outlets, or BPCL e-vouchers. No minimum point balance and no redemption fee on the fuel route. The same 4 RP = ₹1 rate applies through SBI's Shop & Smile catalogue but that route carries a ₹99 + GST fee per redemption. Points can never be applied against the card statement or taken as cash. Unredeemed points carry over one enrolment year and lapse at the end of the second (~24 months).

There is nothing at all to pay on a 3 month plan, and the fee only bites once the purchase reaches ₹20,000. Minimum ₹2,500 to convert. Converting an already billed amount is a separate product costing 1% capped at ₹2,000. · Flexipay and merchant EMI earn nothing. UPI spending0.25%No separate UPI cap published. UPI spends draw on whichever category pool applies · The RuPay variant can be linked to UPI. UPI spends earn by the card's normal MCC rules, 0.25% generally, 2.5% if the merchant sits in an accelerated MCC. Critically, BPCL fuel paid by UPI is explicitly excluded from both reward points and the fuel surcharge waiver, so always dip or tap the card at BPCL pumps, never scan.

Fuel6.25%2,500 RP per statement cycle. I.e. Only ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel per month earns at 25X · 25 RP per ₹100 at BPCL petrol pumps only. Add the 1% surcharge waiver and it reads as ~7.25% value back, the highest fuel return in the Indian market. The ₹10,000/month ceiling is the single number that decides this card: at full use it returns ₹625/month of free fuel (₹7,500/yr). Two traps. Non-BPCL pumps earn zero, and BPCL fuel paid via UPI on the RuPay variant earns zero AND forfeits the surcharge waiver.

Also worth knowing

  • Welcome/renewal benefit: 6,000 bonus Reward Points (₹1,500 of free fuel) credited within 30 days of each annual fee payment. It repeats every year the fee is actually charged, so a year in which the fee is waived is a year without the bonus.
  • WHAT OCTANE ADDS OVER THE BASE BPCL SBI CARD, for ₹1,000 more fee: (1) BPCL pumps go 13X to 25X, i.e. 3.25% to 6.25% in points, ~4.25% to ~7.25% with the surcharge waiver. A clean +3 percentage points. (2) the grocery/departmental/movies/dining pool goes 5X to 10X, 1.25% to 2.5%. (3) 4 domestic lounge visits a year, which the base card does not have at all. (4) welcome/renewal bonus 6,000 RP vs 2,000 RP. A ₹1,000 swing that on its own repays the entire fee difference every year. (5) a ₹2,000 milestone voucher at ₹3L annual spend.
  • BREAK-EVEN vs the base card: on rate alone the extra ₹1,000 needs ~₹33,300 of BPCL fuel a year (~₹2,800/month). Counting the larger welcome bonus, OCTANE is ahead from the first year at almost any fuel volume. The catch runs the other way. The fee waiver threshold is ₹2,00,000/yr here versus ₹1,00,000 on the base card, so a low-spender may pay OCTANE's fee every year while the base card's waives itself.
  • The 25X fuel cap is on SPEND, not just points: ₹10,000/month of BPCL fuel. Anything above that earns nothing on fuel, so a household burning more than ~₹10,000/month of petrol should split fuel across two cards rather than expect 7.25% on all of it.
  • AMBIGUITY IN SBI'S OWN T&C: clause 11.4(a)(6) reads 'Reward Points can be earned for a maximum spend of ₹10000/- per month' with no category attached. Read literally and globally it would gut the card's non-fuel value. Read as a restatement of the fuel cap it is exactly consistent with the 2,500 RP figure, which is how it is modelled here and how the community reads it. Worth re-verifying against a real statement.
  • Reward accrual depends on BPCL merchant IDs being present in SBI's MID list, refreshed monthly on a 'best effort' basis. Occasional missed accruals at newly onboarded pumps are a known and officially disclaimed behaviour.

Other exclusions

  • Flexipay and merchant EMI earn nothing. Points are clawed back on conversion and are only restored if the EMI is cancelled. Never on foreclosure
